Old ferry tickets should be used soon

The new flat rate ticket pricing structure at the Maine State Ferry Service goes into effect on Monday, May 21. This new structure standardizes ferry prices across the entire system. Highlights of the new pricing include the same rate from both sides, no more island or mainland originated tickets; a vehicle round-trip ticket cost of $30, an adult round-trip ticket cost of $11, a child round-trip ticket cost of $5.50; an increased cost to make reservations, from $8 to $15 one way; no more commuter pass; the truck fee over 20 feet dropping to $2.50 per foot. Visit maine.gov/mdot/ferry/fares.

The website says: “Tickets sold prior to effective date of the last Tariff No. 7 update on April 1, 2012, will expire under the new rate structure. Customers will have until May 21, 2018, to upgrade unused tickets sold prior to that date to comparable tickets under the Tariff No. 7 pricing mainland/island pricing structure.” After discussing with ferry personnel about the ensuing confusion from this statement, we determined the safest thing to do with unused tickets that were sold to you prior to April 1, 2012, is to use them before they expire on May 21. Check your ticket dates!

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Steven Oliver Swann, who passed away on May 7 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor.

A celebration of life will be held at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, on Friday, May 25, at 9 a.m. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Swans Island, following the service. Gifts in Steve’s memory may be made to the Maine Veterans’ Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401.

You are invited to an open house at the Swan’s Island Lobster & Marine Museum on Sunday, May 20, from 2-4 p.m. Come find out what the fifth-to-eighth-grade class has been working on to improve the museum. Light snacks and beverages will be served.

Grades three through eight at Swan’s Island Elementary School will attend a performance by the Bangor Symphony Orchestra on Monday, May 21. On Wednesday, May 23, many students will participate in an island bike-a-thon from 12-3 p.m. What a fun week for students as they delight their minds with sound and their bodies with exercise. If you are driving at these times, watch out for our kids.

Happy birthday to Ben Doliber and Chelsea Tripler. Anniversary blessings to Gary and Jeanne Hoyle and Lester and Nevora Stanley.
