Much-loved Lee lauded

Our much lauded Dexter Lee has retired. At the recent town meeting, Selectman Jeffrey Ellison presented him with a plaque (what we know Dexter has always wanted), a congratulatory letter from the Maine Municipal Association and a $5 stipend. Numerous islanders are murmuring that they will never understand how he could retire after such gifts and the Sunday afternoon surprise party he was given. After seeing him in action as a “regular folk” at the town meeting, many of us have a feeling that this is not the last we’ve heard from Dexter – and we’re quite happy about that. We anticipate the history he will share with us as we thank him for the history he has made with Swans Island.

Bev McAloon announced, “You don’t need to be Irish to enjoy a community potluck supper! Join us on St. Patrick’s Day, Friday, March 17, at 5 p.m., in the Swans Island Baptist Church Annex for corned beef and cabbage and lots of Irish music for sing-a-long or just for listening. The corned beef and cabbage is provided, but we need different kinds of potato dishes, salads and desserts.”

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Ernestine E. King, who passed away on Feb. 24. Many of you know Ernestine as our beloved Nancy Davis’ mom. She will be buried with her husband on the King plot in Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Ohio. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 27 Pleasant St., in Brunswick, time and date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Brunswick or to the United Way.

Congratulations to Emily Banks, who was named the “Student of the Month” at Mount Desert Island High School in January. Her warm personality, athletic prowess and academic excellence were noted when she was given this distinction. It’s great for her to be recognized for the qualities all of us on Swans Island have witnessed for years.

Happy birthday to Wendy Joyce, Hailey May, Patricia Teranishi, Elijah Joyce, Monica Cease, Jamie Matthews, Jaime Rose, Niamh Annie Stinson and Marion Stinson. Anniversary blessings to Leslie and Rhonda Ranquist and Matt and Sarah Lane. Happy anniversary to my husband, Karl Haller, to whom I’ve been married 17 years on the 17th of March in the year 2017!
