‘Mermaid family’ grows on Swans

Congratulations to proud parents Kristina Stanley and Lucas Lemoine upon the birth of Kayden Bryce Lemoine on Saturday, Aug. 1. Kayden weighed in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces and is 21 inches long. Kristina refers to him as “the newest addition to my little mermaid family.”

Back by popular demand is the beans and franks dinner at the Swan’s Island Baptist church on Thursday, Aug. 13. Seating times are 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and the cost is $10 per person ages 12 and older; a donation for children under 12 is greatly appreciated. The menu includes baked beans (like Dorothy’s), hot dogs (beef, chicken, or tofu), biscuits, cole slaw or green salad, and dessert.

Many thanks to the participants, organizers, volunteers and attendees of the Annual Chowder Cook-Off and Recreation Department Variety Show. The Chef’s Choice award, an award based on votes from all the cooks themselves, went to Day Rec Zebras (Sarah Jae MacDonald and Annie Joyce) for their Lucrative, Loquacious, Luscious Lobster Chowder entry. First, second and third place for the Cook-Off were, respectively, Andrew Natsios for his Mediterranean Seafood Chowder, Monica Cease for her Scallop/Corn Chowder and Jeffrey Ellison for his East Point Chowder. Other chowder cooks included Betsy Pickup (Jericho Bay Fish Chowder), Ann Railey (Sweet Georgia Lobster Chowder), Jessica Harrington (Swan’s Island Seafood Chowder), Jennifer Van Horne (Corn and Cheese Chowder), Denise Boisvert (Shrimpy Corn Chowder with Sausage), Annette Joyce (Corn Chowder), Tim Trafton (Crab Chowder), John and Gayle Crowley (Over the Top Chowder), Dexter Lee (Gumbo) and Jake Rabatin (Jose Ole Chowder). Desserts were provided by Jeanne Hoyle, John Bryan, Jessica Harrington, Selene Meeks, Elizabeth Natsios, Mary Jane Milner and Kathleen LeMoine. Karl Haller and Donald and Marsha Carlson helped with set-up, clean-up and monitoring the admission tables.

Organizers for the Chowder Cook-Off were Kimberly Haller, Eric Chetwynd, June Rabatin and Fran Chetwynd, and Jake Rabatin; Leah Staples and Lacey Freelove organized the variety show. Over 200 people attended each event. The Variety Show made over $450 for the Recreation Department and the Chowder Cook-Off made over $1,500 for the lighthouse, IOOF Hall and the library.

Don’t miss the last Odd Fellow’s breakfast of the summer on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 7-9 a.m. A Columbus Day weekend breakfast will be held Sunday, Oct. 11.
