MDI Historical Society presents “The Guns They Carried”

MOUNT DESERT — The Mount Desert Island Historical Society will present its next free history lecture at the Old School House & Museum, 373 Sound Drive, in Mount Desert on Thursday, February 28 at 6 p.m.

The presentation by Bob Pyle is titled “The Guns They Carried” and will cover the four most common firearms that men from MDI carried during the Civil War. For example, the Sharps was carried by men like John M. Gilley of the First Maine Cavalry Regiment. The Third Maine Infantry Regiment carried the Springfield after 1862. The most famous Maine Infantry Regiment, the 20th, carried the Enfield pattern 1853. Pyle will also discuss several other types of weapons that were popular at the time.

Pyle retired after a nearly 40-year career as director of the Northeast Harbor Library. His interest in antique firearms goes back to early childhood and the family relics that hung over fireplaces. As a young man, he hunted deer with a Model 1861 Springfield rifle-musket and never hit a thing. He lives in Northeast Harbor with his wife Miriam.
