MOUNT DESERT — Ellie Mason is the 2016 recipient of the Beverly Coleman Scholarship Award. Mason is attending Smith College and plans to major in environmental science and policy.
Mason has a keen interest in ocean conservation, in particular, marine science. She recently attended the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium and felt she not only learned a lot but it was a dream come true to be surrounded by people who had just as much passion as she did facing issues such as right whale conservation. She feels conservation is about salvaging and then rebuilding and ensuring the safety of the things we value, and she wishes to be part of that effort in the future.
In 2010, Dr. Douglas Coleman and his son Thomas established the Beverly Coleman Scholarship Award in memory of Doug Coleman’s late wife, Tom Coleman’s mother. Beverly Coleman volunteered at the library for more than 20 years and was involved with many other community organizations such as the Wild Gardens of Acadia.
