Charlie Wiegle announced the 10th Lobster Cookout, a fundraiser for the Fire Department and EMS, on Sunday, July 31, from 12-2 p.m. This festive event, held at the Atlantic Firehouse, features hamburgers, hotdogs, salads, desserts, drinks and, of course, lobsters. Charlie said, “Can you believe it? This is our tenth year! Come on out and support your volunteer emergency services. Join in on the fun. We might even have a few surprises in store for you!”
Ed Schwabe informed us: “At its July 7 meeting, the board of the Swans Island Electric Cooperative unanimously approved the key terms of the proposed purchase and sale agreement (now, newly entitled “The Asset Transfer Agreement”) with Emera Maine. SIEC members should have received their ballot in the mail along with several explanatory pages of information about the proposed agreement. Additionally, our annual meeting on July 28 [7 p.m. at I.O.O.F. Hall] will focus on the terms of the agreement, and we have invited representatives from Emera to join us and to answer questions. Ballots must be mailed or returned to the cooperative by close of business [4 p.m.] on Monday, Aug. 1, to be counted. This is a confidential ballot. Once it is sealed and mailed, it will not be opened until late on Aug. 1. Our deputy sheriff, Rob Morang, has agreed to open and count the ballots on that date. Rob is an island resident, but is not a member of the cooperative. We appreciate his willingness to serve in this capacity so that we all can be assured of a confidential vote.”
Don’t miss several exhibits at the library that run until the end of July. Award-winning island bird carver Danny Johnson shows his work throughout the month; don’t miss this opportunity to see his artistry. Also, ferry Captain Bob Morehouse has his bowls, platters, pens, animal calls and more on display. These items are for sale, and Bob will be at the bazaar [Saturday, July 30] during his lunch break. Finally, nine artists who have exhibited at the library over the past five years are part of our anniversary celebration retrospective. All artists, even those we have lost, will be represented in the show.
Leah Staples inspires us to bring our running or walking shoes and sign up for the Swans Island 5K race, hosted by Leila Banks, on Saturday, July 30. You may register at 8 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m. On the same day, the library puts on its annual bazaar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and celebrates its 5th anniversary in the new building.
Happy birthday to Brad Ames, Sonja Jane Philbrook, Chang Mee “Rose” Ellison, Megan Eileen Tripler, Troy L. May and Shelly Cook. Anniversary blessings to Seth and Michelle Joy, Nick and Jodie Lee Mauger and Rev. Ken and Pat Dutille.
