The 40th Literary Evening on Islesford was last Thursday. The Rockbound Grange became the Islesford Neighborhood House in 1976. Sarah Corson organized the Literary Evening to honor Harry Spurling who painted, and also learned and recited poetry. Corson teamed with Erica Merrill, who got those ideas on the island calendar. The two of them have been involved ever since.
Cheryl Sholl organized the reception, which included a celebratory cake from Starr Cummin Bright. Readers included Ashley Bryan, who started the evening with a poem he had written, “Rain Coming.” Other readers were Skip Stevens, Emily Axelrod, Jack Merrill, Alexandra Zukerman, Joy Sprague, Stephan Henry, Starr Cummin Bright, Kathy Lake, Rachel Speakman and Jay Speakman.
Ashley ended the evening with Langston Hughes’ “My People,” which is one of his regular poems to recite to groups. Cindy Thomas had books for the library and welcomed sponsors to give in honor/celebration/memory of others. It was one of the best attended things so far, with all the folding chairs from the back added to the regular chairs.
A small sample includes Jeri and Ted Spurling, Jack and Ellie Miller, Alden and Barbara Hathaway, Dick Atlee, and Peyton Eggleston.
Sharon Leckbee Daley of the Maine Seacoast Mission, says, “This is a thank you and recognition to Cindy Thomas and Sara Vosloo, who are the health aides for the Mission on Islesford. They do a lot for us and the island. If you don’t know about telemedicine ask them! So thanks to two women who are giving a lot to their community.”
