Island residents to entertain

Ignite your holiday spirit with an outstanding concert that includes two residents of Swans Island. Peter Phillips sings with the Acadia Choral Society, and I am the choir’s assistant director and accompanist. The choir performs its annual Christmas concerts at St. Saviour’s Church in Bar Harbor on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. The concerts carry the theme “Heaven Comes Down to Earth” in a variety of musical styles. Guest musicians include soprano and baritone soloists, a Mount Desert Island High School student percussionist and an early music consort.

Bev McAloon tells us that the annual island Christmas caroling will take place during the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 13. Stay tuned for more information about this popular event.

Mark your calendars for the Annual Community Christmas Gathering at the Baptist Church on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. You will hear inspiring Christmas tunes from the community choir, a newlywed island couple, a returning college songstress and many others. Local poet Gary Rainford will captivate you with his artistic offerings and an ensemble of young ladies will enchant you as they sing a popular Christmas carol. If you’d like more information about the event, or would like to participate in it, please contact Kimberly Haller at 526-4488.

Lacey Schlag, Swan’s Island School 6-8 grade teacher, informs us that the 8th-grade auction, accompanied by Gary Rainford’s delicious spaghetti dinner, will take place on Thursday, Dec. 11, in the school gymnasium. Please come and support this fundraising effort for their class trip. Remember that they are also selling Yankee candles for this trip.

We thank Donna Wiegle for sharing an updated holiday flyer that EcoMaine has sent reminding us what can and cannot be recycled. Special emphasis is placed on materials we will be encountering over the holiday season. For information, go to ecomaine.org or call them at 773-1738.

Happy birthday to Keisha Kelliher and Suzy Treadwell.
