Investment backfires

TREMONT — The town is the defendant in a small claims action regarding a property tax payment.

According to Town Manager Dana Reed, Thomas Carroll initiated the action in an attempt to get $675 back from the town for a property tax payment he made on a property at 243 Harbor Drive. Carroll does not own the property but was in hopes of gaining an ownership interest in the property by making the payment, Reed said.

When that did not happen, Carroll approached the town to get a refund.

Reed said he explained to Carroll that the town accepts payments on property taxes from anyone, but the town does not have any authority to decide who owns that property. The next court date is April 1.
