Input sought on new ferry

Gwen May informs us that there will be a new ferry info meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Swans Island School gymnasium. Come learn about, give your input and listen to what is planned to date for the proposed new ferry coming in 2020. If you want to see the new ferry design, download the PDF document at; this is the information that Nate Benoit of the Maine DOT will share with us at the meeting.

Congratulations to Donna Wiegle for being awarded “Woman of the Year” at the YWCA of Mount Desert Island’s Women of Distinction event. As many of you know, Donna is the director of the Mill Pond Health Center on Swans Island, and she has been instrumental in bringing diabetes prevention and exercise programs to our island. I must sneak in that she is in good company with the YWCA’s “Girl of the Year” Faith Reece, one of my favorite people on this planet.

Special guests on the island this past week included Muffet Stewart, Tracy Shaffer, Carol Yancey, and Ken MacKinnon. The community spirit was once again alive and well thanks to the hospitality of Selene Meeks, the tantalizing Tower tour given by Eric Chetwynd and the informative assistance of Jane at Saturn Press. An enjoyable time was had by all.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Paula Day Johnson, who passed away on Friday, Sept. 25. A service and reception in celebration of Paula’s life will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Buchanan Alumni House, 160 College Ave., University of Maine, Orono. Interment is planned for noon on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Rose Hill Cemetery on Swans Island. Gifts in Paula’s memory may be sent to the Swans Island Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 7, Swans Island, ME 04685, or to the Animal Orphanage, 71 Airport Road, Old Town, ME 04468.

It seems like the fun just began, but Meredith Creswell reminds us that the last Sunday evening hymn sing will be Oct. 4. She encourages us to come to the Advent Church, sing and/or play an instrument, call out our requests and “Make a joyful noise to the Lord!”

Dr. Timothy Oh and the staff from Caring Hands of Maine Dental Center will be offering dental services on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Health Center. Both current and new patients may call their office at 667-6789 to schedule an appointment.

Happy belated birthday to our Deputy Sheriff Rob Morang. Happy birthday to Jennifer LeMoine Turner, Carolyn Martin, Scott Carlson, Brianna Ashley Davis, Lester Logan Stanley, Sharon Stone, and Julie MacDonald.

Anniversary blessings to Kevin and Debbie Staples, Jerry and Monica Cease, and Sam and Abigail Dy.
