Hat’s off to Captain Aaron Sheridan

You don’t have much time left to wish a fond farewell to one of our ferry captains, Captain Aaron Sheridan. Aaron’s last day is July 7, and he will be missed by many. We send best wishes to you in your new endeavors and have enjoyed your services to our island. Hat’s off to you!

Joan Steel, co-owner of The Salty Dog Gallery in Southwest Harbor, shares with us an exciting event for Swans Islanders: A number of Swans Island Artists will show their work in The Salty Dog Gallery from June 28 through July. There will be a reception to meet these artists Sunday, July 3, at 2:30 p.m.; hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served. Music will be played on guitars by Swans Island’s own The Walker Brothers (Marshall and Shepard Walker). These artists will exhibit their work: Miranda Batiste, John Bryan, Missy Crowell, Jessica Defrenn, Christine Dentremont, Meg Dreyer, Laura Farley, Gary Hoyle, Kathy Krafjack, Iver Lofving, Annmarie Maguire, Bev McAloon, Bill McMullin, Aby Milner, Hal Minis, Jennifer Pope and Jill Trask. The Salty Dog Gallery is at 322 Main St. Call 244-5918.

Meghan Joyce encourages us to shop-til-we-drop at the summer craft sales every Thursday at the Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s a great way to get an early start on holiday gifts.

Iver Lofving reminds us of the July 4 picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mill Pond Park; bring something to grill and something to share, if you want. There also will be a bake sale to benefit the Bread of Life Food Pantry. Iver tells us that at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 22, there will be a benefit potluck for the Bread of Life Food Pantry at the Odd Fellows’ Hall.

The 66th meeting of the members of the Swan’s Island Electric Cooperative will be held at the I.O.O.F. Hall on Thursday, July 28, at 7 p.m. The following are items on the agenda: the reports of officers and trustees, the election of three trustees for the board of the cooperative to serve three-year terms, discussion of the proposed purchase-and-sale agreement with Emera and explanation of the ballot for voting members.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Jean Michaud, who passed away recently. Jean’s husband and daughter, Jerry and Tracy, have worked on the island, and we share in their sadness over this loss.

Clay Savage informs us that the Methodist Church has started its summer schedule and will have a service starting at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday except July 3. Clay will fill in for Max Creswell until he arrives on island. “All are welcome! Hope to see you there. Come worship with us in a loving atmosphere.”

Happy belated birthday to Jeanne Hoyle, Ed Schwabe, Hope LeMoine, Myron “Sonny” Sprague Jr., Kimberly Haller, Jenn Atkins Solotaroff and Earl Lowell. Happy birthday to Liam David Lane, Colleen Hyland, Siobhan Ryan, Bonnie Hopkins, Julia Rose Davis, Gemma Grace Staples, Stanley David Carlson, Deborah Staples and Joshua B. Turner. Anniversary blessings to Donny and Marsha Carlson, Tim and Suzy Treadwell, Kenny and Angie LeMoine and Maili Bailey and Iver Lofving.
