Haller an able seaman

The day is finally here when I can publicly congratulate my husband, Karl Haller, for completing his mariner requirements to obtain his able seaman credential from the National Maritime Center through the Merchant Mariner Program of the United States Coast Guard. Karl wishes to thank the many people—islanders, ferry personnel, family, mainlanders, co-workers—whose helped him in reaching his goal. “The following incredible people supported me by providing accommodations in other towns, studying with me and lending materials, granting generous financial support, providing sea-time opportunities and giving me unlimited moral support: Marsha Doughty-Carlson and Donald Carlson, Andrew Jones, Meredith Creswell, Dave Wells, the congregation of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, Captain Dan McNichol, Captain Bob Morehouse, Captain Vernon Lewis, Kevin, Rick Card, Captain Aaron Sheridan and my wife. Many others have provided encouragement, and I am truly grateful to all of you.”

We give a hearty “thank you” to Bass Harbor Bob for making our wait time at the ferry terminal a more pleasurable one with the changing quotes on the TV monitor.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Diana L. Connelly, who passed away on April 8. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to METAvivor/Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Research and Support (http://www.metavivor.org).

Peter Staples and Terry Staples invited us to join the family of Marguerite Staples at the Swans Island Baptist Church for a celebration of Marguerite’s life on Saturday, April 22, at noon. Terry said, “The service will be followed by a committal service at Rose Hill cemetery. We would like to have all of mother’s friends join us and share stories and memories at a luncheon at the church annex following the service.”

Donna Wiegle informed us: “Dr. Timothy Oh and the staff of Caring Hands of Maine Dental Center will be on the island on Friday, April 21, at the Mill Pond Health Center. New patients are welcome. To schedule an appointment, call his office in Ellsworth at 667-6789.”

Many island people have come to see Dexter Lee’s posting of the Swans Island Odd Fellows Sunday breakfast schedule as a harbinger of summer. Mark your calendars now with the 2017 dates: May 28 (Memorial Day); June 18 (Father’s Day); July 2; July 9; July 23; Aug. 6; Aug. 20; Oct. 8. Adults are $9, under high school is $5, and babes in arm are free. They serve from 7-9 a.m. and it is all-you-can-eat.

Happy birthday to Esther Ruth LeMoine, Kevin Brenden Walker, Astrid Curtis and Boston Kennneth LeMoine. Anniversary blessings to Theodore L. and Bonnie L. Turner.
