Exhibition of photos of islanders to open

Miranda Batiste sends us the following press release for an exciting event soon to occur. “The permanent population of Swan’s Island, Hancock County, Maine is 320. One of those, Island photographer Miranda Batiste, was determined to capture images of the Island families as a record and a celebration of life on the island in 2014. Starting in April, slowly but surely, participation began and now the photographs number over 1,000. Editing these down to the final exhibition is, Miranda said, ‘a delightful, frustrating, thrilling challenge. This is a group of people whose lives are constantly in motion, no single shot fully captures their spirit. We have taken extended family groups, individuals and their pets, and each shoot has been chaotic, tender and fun. What shines out of these photographs is strength, resourcefulness, and to my eyes, love.’

The exhibit, We are Swan’s Island, will open on Monday, Dec 15, at the Swan’s Island Library. The vast majority of permanent residents are there, some having family names that go back generations to the original settlers, some recent arrivals, all committed to Swan’s Island and its unique and surprising community.” For more information, contact Miranda at [email protected] and plan to join her at the opening on Monday at 6 p.m.

Leah Staples informs us that we have a rousing line-up of basketball games this week at the Swan’s Island School. On Friday, Dec. 12, our teams will play Pemetic School at 12 p.m. in our gymnasium, and on Tuesday, Dec. 16, we host Bar Harbor at 12 p.m. Please come out, cheer loudly and support our teams.

Chelsea Tripler updates us that, until further notice, there will be no Tuesday library programs for the 3-5 grades.

We have an amazing variety of musical selections, instrumental and vocal, as well as original poetry by Gary Rainford, for the upcoming Community Christmas Gathering on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. in the Baptist Church. The choir’s last rehearsal is 10 a.m. at the Baptist Church on Saturday, Dec. 13. Please join us in a celebration of Christmas that has something for everyone to enjoy.
