The Dippers were out on May 2. It was a hot day — 63 degrees! The water temperature was about 43 degrees. Barb Fernald and Cindy were joined by Colleen Bunker, and Phoebe Gray went in. As the air gets warmer (with the water warmest in September), the dip may happen more frequently.
Tuesday tea was well attended. Peter Philbrook, Malcolm Fernald, Mary Schuch, David Thomas, Ashley Bryan, Jason Pickering, Ann Fernald, Chris Sandberg, Dan and Katie Fernald. The pan was empty.
Parking stickers are out. Summer and extended season people are starting to arrive. Miklos Pogany and Claire have arrived; Dan Field and some friends came, Dan bringing a large number of summer crates, so of course it rained that day. Marian Baker has been up to check on the store after a winter’s mistreatment.
Per Nan Hadlock: Hearty congratulations to Skye Howard, a student at Sumner Memorial High School who was accepted into the UMO Sustainable Energy Leaders of the Future (SELF) Institute for this summer! “The SELF Institute is a residential program for Maine’s rural high school students. The 3-1/2 day program will focus on the responsible use of forest ecosystems as a building block for sustainable and renewable energy. Students will explore cutting-edge forest bioproducts research at the University of Maine by participating in demonstrations, hands-on projects and field trips.”
The May 7 edition of the Island Institute’s newspaper, The Working Waterfront, has an article by Barb Fernald about Hugh Smallwood’s death in late April. The article can be found at: www.islandinstitute.org.
Colleen Bunker will give a lecture on nutrition and health at the Cranberry House Arts Center on Wednesday, May 23, 7 p.m.
Parking at Manset begins next Thursday, May 24, in time for Memorial Day weekend. Sutton will run from Southwest Harbor, leaving at 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., and 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. It leaves Manset 20 minutes after each hour. Sutton returns from Islesford at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., stopping at Great Cranberry at 20 past.
Cory Alley’s birthday is May 17. Sannah and Whit Chaplin share May 20 with Tammy Palmer. Jim Fortune will blow out candles on May 21.
