Cranberry Isles: Ladies Aid Society is taking wreath orders

Rain and wind were plentiful last week in the Cranberry Isles, accompanied by rough seas for most of the week. Deer were plentiful, too, wandering the islands, including the parking areas, roads and most yards. Though leaves are already swirling on the ground and roads, apparently yards are still green enough for grazing.

Windy, rainy weather and rough seas failed to deter the Dip of the Month club from their commitment to brave October seas. There was a big gathering for the dip. According to Barbara Fernald, “Even with 30knot wind gusts, we still found a lee in Bunker’s Cove.”

Stefanie Alley and Cindy Thomas, celebrating 18 years of consecutive monthly dips, were joined by Barb Fernald, Joy SpraguePat Mocarsky and Mary Schuch. The air temperature was 65 degrees and the water was 54 degrees.

“We were honored,” Barb said, “to also have two dedicated coldwater swimmers join us. Caitlin Hopkins and Kelcy Engstrom swim several times a week in Portland. They were visiting Iselsford with Christina Blank and her wife, Amy, for the long weekend.” Barb added that the visiting swimmers did laps in the deeper water for about 15 minutes. Impressive, ladies!

This Monday, the Co-op store on Islesford reduced their opening hours. They are now open Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Finger floats were moved at Islesford last weekendJim Fortune says all the skiff docks will be out by Oct. 15. One main float will be in place at each town dock until Nov. 15. Great Cranberry’s winter float will be launched at the same time the main float is removed in November. Manset floats are scheduled to be hauled out the last week of October.
