Cranberry Isles: Inter-island workshops

Spring rains have brought definitive signs of the season to the Cranberry Isles. Mornings are misty, afternoons are warmer and nights are filled with a chorus of frogs. Trees are budding and yards are tinged with green. The Saturday ferries saw some fog, but the sea, at least in Islesford’s harbor, was tranquil.

On Tuesday, at the Islesford Library Coffee Hour, Cindy Thomas served an island favorite called “hard” gingerbread. Despite its name, the moist, delicious cake disappeared quickly. Ashley Bryan was unable to attend, but everyone looks forward to seeing him next week. Those present included Anna Fernald, David Thomas, Tom Powell, Lewis Powell, Mary Schuch, Malcolm Fernald, Zinnia Gray, Quinn Gray, Jeff Pease and Barbara Caldwell-Pease.

Coffee Hour only runs through May, so, if you have been meaning to stop by, put it on your calendar soon. Coffee hour starts at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and everyone is welcome.

Cranberry Isles has an opportunity to host the Island Institute’s Outer Island Learning & Teaching Collaborative 2019 Inter-Island Event on Islesford in September. They are looking for community members to lead and co-lead the program.

Volunteers are sought to help with logistics, programming, coordination and leading mini-workshops for groups of students. If you think you can help in any way, please add your name to the signup sheet at the post office.

January Bennett, who attended the Inter-Island Event at Monhegan last fall with her son Tristan, a fifth grader at Ashley Bryan School, expressed appreciation for the work of organizers and volunteers. Bennett said “when the events are well managed they’re fun. For the new kids, it’s meeting new people and for the ones who have been there before, it’s like coming back to old friends.”

Tristan still talks about the mini workshop on salamanders, saying “what I liked most about the trip was looking at salamanders and learning that they like wet, dark places.”

Amanda Bracy reminds everyone that April 30 is the last day for the Downeast Windjammers commuter boat, the Miss Lizzie, until next fall. Starting May 1, the morning commuter will be run by Sail Acadia and there will be no evening commuter.

Happy birthday to Eric Dyer on April 26 and to John Zuck on April 27. Happy birthday to Olivia Grace Johnston on April 28. Congratulations to Sally and Skip Stevens who celebrate their wedding anniversary on April 28. On May 1, birthday greetings go to Tom Morse, Peter Benson, Sofie Dowling and Emily and Genny Seanor.
