Cranberry Isles: Celebrations abound

Happy birthday wishes to Liam Carroll Astbury on Jan. 15 and Averi Rose White on Jan. 16. On Jan. 19, we have two celebrations as Melanie Elyse Sanborn and Colby Watson Hicks share their special day. Let’s light the candles and celebrate this special day of your life. Happy birthday.

January has a long list of observances or holidays. The following are just a few to ponder during the cold month ahead: January is Bath Safety Month, National Hot Tea Month, National Skating Month, Walk and/or Train Your Pet Month, National Sunday Supper Month, National Soup Month and National Polka Music Month just to name a few. Good luck choosing just one to celebrate during the month ahead.

“With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was an American political figure, diplomat and activist. She served as the First Lady of the United States from March 1933 to April 1945 during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four terms in office, making her the longest-serving First Lady of the United States.

Jay Fleming, a photographer from the Chesapeake Bay Area, worked with the Island Institute and spent 10 days visiting Matinicus, Islesford and Vinalhaven, the latter thanks to a friend in the Chesapeake Bay. David Thomas writes: “The pic of Andy Moody is a treasure.” and the title “Maine Coast October 2018” will get you to it.

If you need a reason to come up to the Cranberry Isles, Islesford will have a Pick of the Litter free swap! Come to Islesford Neighborhood House next Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. Suggested donations are of $5 for adults and $1 for kids. That’s it for the cost. Once you’re in the door, everything is free! Leftover items will be taken off-island to a charitable shop.

For her birthday, Emily Damon received a cookbook called “Feed Your People,” by Leslie Jonath. It includes a Little Cranberry Chicken Potpie, thanks to Merry “Corky” White, Henry Isaacs’ sister. Merry enjoyed some time on Islesford this past summer.

Happy birthday to Cathy Sinnott on Jan. 11! Samantha Krasnow and Wanda Porter share the 12th, followed on the 14th by Ann Fernald and her great-granddaughter, Zinnia Pearl Gray.

Juniper James Petrella was born on Dec. 28 at Reston (Va.) Hospital Center to proud parents Martha Bunker and Christopher Petrella. Juniper is the second child for the couple. Big brother Emerson is going to be her best friend and protector as he is already in love with his baby sister. I am sure the family pug, LuLu, is her usual laid-back self and happy to have another human to love. Juniper who was 7 lbs., 2oz., and 20 inches at birth, is the granddaughter of David Bunker of Cranberry and Deborrah Bunker of Plaster Rock, Canada. Congratulations to the family and we will see you on Cranberry this summer.

There will be a meeting of the Ladies Aid on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 4:30 to discuss upcoming activities including Valentine events. Hope to see you there.

We finish off January birthdays with Ian Westphal on Jan. 22 and Gary Allen on Jan. 29. Many happy returns of the day to you both.
