Congratulations abound this week

First we congratulate Annie Joyce and Erik Swartzwelder upon their engagement. Annie is the daughter of Jason and Taffy Joyce and the granddaughter of Carlton and Pacita Joyce. Erik is the son of Ron and Linda Swartzwelder, both former military personnel, and their family has called many places home, including England, Germany, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia and Colorado. Erik studied Criminal Justice at Liberty University where he met Annie in a U.S. history class. The two became inseparable quickly. Erik graduated in 2013 and has been working since in security, though he plans on becoming a police officer in the near future. An autumn wedding on Swans Island is planned, and the couple will reside in Virginia.

Congratulations to our Mount Desert Island High School graduates. Tyler Philbrook, Will Smith, Jessica DeFrenn and Brandon Davis don cap and gown at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, at MDI High School. We are proud of each one of you.

We extend another congratulations to Annie Leora Joyce upon the completion of her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Liberty University. Annie is making herself available as a private tutor for grades K-6 from now until the end of August. She says, “I have lots of experience designing hands-on, engaging and fun lessons to introduce new concepts or just to strengthen skills. Contact me at 479-6492 or [email protected] for more information regarding session content, hourly rates and other questions.”

Dexter Lee informs us that the selectmen are negotiating a contract with the Hancock County Sheriff’s department for a live-on-the-island deputy. If you have a problem that requires law enforcement, call the Sheriff’s office at 667-7575, or in an emergency, 9-1-1.

Gwen May reports that she will be out of the office at 4 p.m. sharp on Thursday, June 11, in order to catch the last ferry off island. Please allot enough time for any business with her to help her observe this time restriction.

Don’t forget about the scrumptious Odd Fellow’s breakfast this Sunday, June 14, from 7-9 a.m.

Happy birthday to Isaac Stinson, Abby Ordway, Ezra Daniel Johnson, Fritz Gardner, John Trask, Jane Ojala, Gabrielle Farley, Angela J. Tapley, Charlie Wiegle and Karen Ann Martin. Anniversary blessings to Lawrence and Sheila Smith and Zeke and Lacey Freelove.
