Concert, Parent’s Day prove popular

Matt Shipman and Erica Brown’s time on Islesford July 27 was delightful. They had a vocal harmony workshop in the afternoon, which was appreciated and enjoyed by those who attended, both singers and listeners. Their evening concert was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed. Extra chairs were brought in. Matt and Erica liked the island, the people and how welcomed they were. Thanks to John Gleason and Katrina Van Dusen for their part in organizing the day.

July 30 was Parents’ Day at Islesford Boatworks. Parents joined staff and kids in the shop and saw what’s been going on all summer and helped build the boat.

July 30 was a busy day. In the evening, the turnout at the film “Spotlight” and Matt Carroll’s discussion was strong, with good questions after. Extra chairs had been brought in, and there were still people standing.

This coming Sunday, Aug. 7, the Islesford Dock will host Blackbird – Raven – Crow!, a fundraiser for the new Ashley Bryan Center and the “Story Teller” Pavilion. The pavilion is being built to display Ashley’s art, seaglass windows, paintings and puppets. Marian Baker wrote, “If you are interested in donating anything related to a blackbird, raven, or crow, in terms of art, book, found object, painting, ceramic, poem, photo, food, etc, please contact me at the pottery shop (244-9108). If you can attend (and buy), please come! Hope to see you there!”

The dedication and celebration of The Storyteller Pavilion will take place on Islesford on Monday, Aug. 15, from 3-5 p.m.

Also, Sunday, Aug. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon, is the time to drop off things – clothing, toys, books – at Neighborhood House to get things in place for the fair.

Monday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the Islesford fair, including kids’ games, a silent auction, a white elephant section, food, baked goods and raffle. Also there will be historical society publications, fire department T-shirts, a dunk tank – Here’s to warm weather! – the bounce house so enjoyed by kids and ice cream. There are some great deals on books and clothing, some of which is “broken in,” some have tags. If you help get things organized on Sunday, you’ll know what’s where on the tables. Participate in a boatbuilding demonstration! There’s a 5K fun run and a 2-on-2 basketball tournament. And available at either island’s fair, the town’s new phone books are updated and here. They are $10 each for the benefit of the Cranberry Isles Education Fund, and if you miss either fair, you can still get them at the town office or either of the island libraries.

Marian Baker is organizing “They Rocked the Dock,” a tribute to Dan and Cynthia Lief, who have spent 24 years running the Islesford Dock restaurant. “Now it’s our turn to host them at Islesford Neighborhood House.” Come to a special tribute evening on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 5:30 p.m.

Help is needed in several areas. Food: finger foods and/or cash for beverages. Marci Lief is in charge. Program: Frank Reece is the program consultant and master of ceremonies. Please contact him by Aug. 10 if you would like to participate. Set-up: Judith Timyan Ravenhill runs this job. Decorations: looking for a leader. Please contact Marci. Serving: during the event. Another leader and team needed for this important function. Cleanup: Jeff Lauren is heading this up. Please help! And please come to this opportunity to thank Dan and Cynthia for all they’ve done and congratulate them “as they turn over a new summer leaf!”

No movies Aug. 8 because of the island fair.

The calendar jumped ahead last week and included this week’s dates.

Karen and Hugh Smallwood’s anniversary is on Aug. 5, and Graham Bright’s birthday is on Aug. 8. (Looks like the island’s throwing a big party for Graham.)
