Chris Sawyer is hero of the week

We may be down two ferry boats and losing a number of trips in the past week, but Swans Islanders have many people for whom to be thankful. Our hero of the week is Chris Sawyer, who has run many trips on his lobster boat these past few days for commuters, plane catchers and desperate ferry riders. We also thank Carol Seavey at the Bass Harbor terminal for going well above duty for stranded travelers this past weekend.

Another islander who works behind the scenes to make our island a better place is Christine Dentremont. As Christal Applin describes her, “Christine never looks for recognition but gets things done in a determined but friendly manner.” Most recently, Christine has put in hundreds of grant-writing hours for the Swan’s Island Mill Pond Park Preschool Playground project. Up to 50 percent of the almost $30,000 project would be funded if the project is awarded this grant through the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, leaving about $15,000 to raise for the playground. As they await word from this grant, Christine and the project team (Lacey Freelove, Jamie Matthews, Christal Applin) have created an opportunity for all of us to contribute through an online campaign that runs through Dec. 18. Please consider visiting their site at igg.me/at/swansisland to see pictures of the projected playground and various fundraising activities, to read more about the project and to view the enticing wreaths and Mount Desert Rock sea salt given as thanks for certain levels of donations you will wish to make. Keep our youngest islanders and friends growing strong!

Walking at the school begins on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Donna Wiegle informs us that school Principal Heather Webster has given the thumbs up for us to walk in the gymnasium this winter on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8:45-9:45 a.m. Donna reminds us to bring clean, dry shoes to change into when you arrive, and to share this information with anyone you think would enjoy coming out for walking.

Meghan Joyce announces that a Holiday Craft sale will be held at the library this Saturday, Nov. 29, from 4-8 p.m.

Tammy Tripler reminds us that the next senior luncheon in the school gymnasium will be on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 11:30 a.m.

Happy birthday to Aiden Sheridan, Marilyn Lianna Sawyer, Lesley Ann Ranquist, Rhonda Ranquist, Marissa Rozenski and Pat Dutille. Anniversary blessings to Howard and Christine Dentremont, Adam and Theresa Joy, and Bud and Heidi Martin.
