Bike rodeo set

BAR HARBOR — Last year, the MDI Lions Club was a major sponsor of the annual bike safety rodeo at the Southwest Harbor Police Department, taking over a role held for years by Kiwanis International.

Spurred by the success of last year’s event, the Lions have teamed up with local police for an islandwide bike rodeo at Mount Desert Island High School.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, and is open to all children, according to Chad Terry of the Lions Club. Free bike helmets, refreshments and raffle tickets for bicycles will be available.

Terry said a bike safety course will be set up in the back parking lot at the high school, where young riders can test their knowledge of the rules of the road. Officers from police departments in Bar Harbor, Mount Desert and Southwest Harbor and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department will be on hand providing safety tips.

The Lions and the Southwest Harbor Medical Center clinic committee are making available bike helmets to participants at no charge.

Two $500 gift certificates – one for Southwest Cycle, the other for Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop – will net the lucky winners new bikes.
