Basketball tournament planned

Leah Staples has announced a three-on-three basketball tournament at the Swan’s Island Elementary School gymnasium on Saturday, April 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The entry fee is $10 per person for high school and up and $5 per student for grades three through eight. Pizza, chips, drinks and homemade sweets will be for sale. All proceeds will go to the school’s basketball program for travelling expenses and warm-up shirts for next season. Leah requested, “If anyone has a team, please let Eric or me know before April 6. Thank you. We would love to get 10 teams this year, so come on out all you b-ball players!”

Donna Wiegle has informed us about the 2017 tick report from Maine Medical Center’s Vector-borne Disease Lab: “Available for download is a report provided by Chuck Lubelczyk, field biologist, who visits Swans Island several times a year collecting ticks and testing them for tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease. I have been working with Chuck for about 10 years on both tick collection and education. The 2017 report is somewhat encouraging regarding the infection rate of the ticks collected. In the spring collection, only 19 percent of the ticks collected were found to carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. In the fall collection, the infection rate was 17 percent. This is good news for our community, as infection rates in the past have been as high as 54 percent. We still need to be aware and take all measures possible to protect ourselves, our children, and our animals from Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.”

Karen Preston Griffin has notified us that the transfer station hours have changed to the summer schedule: Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 4-7 p.m.; Saturday, July and August only, noon to 3 p.m. These times are in effect from April 1 through Sept. 30.

Donna Wiegle has reminded us: “Dr. Grace Price will be on the island on Thursday, April 12. Please call 244-5630 if you would like to schedule an appointment. Dr. Price comes out every other month on the second Thursday of the month. Dr. Kuffler is here every other month opposite of Dr. Price on the third Friday of the month, so we have a primary care provider in person once a month.”

A dental clinic with Dr. Timothy Oh and Caring Hands of Maine is scheduled for Friday, April 20, at the Mill Pond Health Center. Call Oh’s office in Ellsworth at 667-6789 to schedule an appointment. New patients are welcome.

Happy birthday to Meredith Creswell, Luz Denise Harting, Josiah Adam Joy, Zachary Harvey, Candis Joyce, Theo May, Seth Gordon Joy, Isabella Joyce, Richard Griffin, Laurie Farley, Anna Carr, Bill Banks Jr., Theodore L. Turner and Brian Krafjack.
