Art exhibit, 5K and more coming up



Works by Kathy Krafjack will be exhibited at the library beginning Saturday, Aug. 1. Entitled “Water, Woods, and Feathers,” this show will run for two weeks, and you’ll not want to miss it.

The Eighth Annual Swans Island 5K race will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the $10 race fee includes a T-shirt. The race starts at 9 a.m. at the Swans Island school and ends at the Swans Island Recreation Building. Come walk, run or whatever gets you across the finish line. For more information, call 479-0389. Proceeds go to help Safe Passage, an organization that provides holistic educational programs for about 500 Guatemalan children and 100 mothers coming from nearly 300 families.

Rick Dubois, veterinarian for the Swans Island vet clinic, will provide services on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Atlantic Fire Department.

The Chowder Cook-off and Recreation Department Variety Show round off our Aug. 1, offerings. The cook-off runs from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the IOOF Hall, followed by the variety show upstairs at 6:30 p.m.

If you are off-island on Aug. 1, you can catch Gary Rainford at a poetry reading and signing of his new book at Books-a-Million in Bangor at 11 a.m. Other readings and signings by Gary are on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse (Swans Island) and on Monday, Aug. 24, at Sherman’s Bookstore in Bar Harbor from 7-9 p.m.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Ruth Elizabeth Orcutt upon her passing on Saturday, July 11. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, at the Swan’s Island Methodist Church, with interment at the Rose Hill Cemetery. Those who desire may make contributions in Ruth’s memory to the Methodist Church at P.O. Box 324, Swans Island, ME 04685.

Charlie Wiegle tells us to mark our calendars for the annual Swan’s Island Fire and Rescue lobster cookout fundraiser on Sunday, July 26, at the Atlantic Firehouse from 12-2 p.m. They also will serve hamburgers, hotdogs, salads, desserts and drinks.

Dexter Lee informs us that the annual selectmen’s summer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, at IOOF Hall. All are welcome.

Happy birthday to Leah Michelle Staples, Chang Mee “Rose” Ellison, Shelly Cook, Megan Eileen Tripler, Troy L. May and Kenny LeMoine III. Anniversary blessings to Rev. Ken and Pat Dutille and Seth and Michelle Joy.
