Young skippers gear up for fall

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — As summer sailors prepare to return their boats to storage, some young skippers are gearing up for a busy “off” season.

The Mount Desert Island Community Sailing Center (MDICSC) in Southwest Harbor is hosting a fall sailing club for sailors in eighth to 12th grade.

The club is for intermediate to advanced sailors who want to hone their skills prior to the spring season. The club will be coached by John Macauley for the third year in a row.

Macauley said all of the students are experienced sailors.

“All of the sailors have been on the MDI sailing team,” Macauley said. “They want to practice and be able to learn new things for the spring season.”

Because the club is not a Maine Principals Association-sanctioned team, eighth-graders are able to join.

Practice begins on Sept. 14 and will be held Wednesdays and Thursdays after school. The cost is $225 per sailor.

The club is part of the newly formed Penobscot Valley Sailing League, a group of six midcoast schools that want to extend sailing past the high school sailing season.

George Stevens Academy, Oceanside High School in Rockland, Camden Hills Regional High School, Islesboro Central School and Boothbay Region High School also are in the league.

Three regattas are planned: Sept. 17 at MDICSC, Oct. 1 at Boothbay Harbor and Oct. 15 at Rockland Community Sailing. Depending on the number of sailors, the club may travel to Portland for some Sail Maine regattas.

Macauley, a longtime sailor who teaches beginning adult sailing at MDICSC, said he enjoys working with students.

“I like their energy and enthusiasm,” Macauley said. “They are an eager group of kids. They suck up knowledge like a sponge. Working with young sailors is very rewarding.”
