YMCA head steps down

BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island YMCA CEO Alan Mogridge has resigned, he said in an email to members of the organization today.

Mogridge had been on a leave of absence from the Y since December, following a cancer diagnosis. He has been in treatment in New York City for a nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

“I met with our board president, Bob Rechholtz, last week to resign…so that I can focus on my health and the MDI Y can find a healthy full-time leader,” he wrote.

The email said that despite a good long-term prognosis, he recently learned he will need three more months of chemotherapy and three months of rehab after that.

“Nine months out of the office is too much to ask of any organization,” he said.

A new interim CEO, Bob Oickle, begins work Monday. He will take over from Pete Milinazzo, who has been serving in the role since December.
