MOUNT DESERT — Construction of a new two-story office and residential building in Northeast Harbor, which will be the new home of Maine Seacoast Mission, has started with the installation of utility services.
The 8,000-square-foot building also will house the offices of Mount Desert 365, the nonprofit organization that is constructing it, and two two-bedroom apartments that will be available for year-round rental.
The building site is on Old Firehouse Lane, at the edge of the town-owned parking lot that overlooks the Northeast Harbor Marina. The marina is the home port of Sunbeam V, the vessel the Seacoast Mission uses to take various programs and services to several of Maine’s offshore islands.
The Mission recently announced the sale of its long-time Bar Harbor headquarters, a 41-room mansion known as La Rochelle, to the Bar Harbor Historical Society. The Mission will move into its new office space in Northeast Harbor when construction of that building is completed, which is expected to be in the summer of 2020. Meanwhile, it’s leasing a portion of La Rochelle back from the historical society and Mission staff continue to work there.
A4 Architects of Bar Harbor designed the building. E.L. Shea of Ellsworth is the general contractor.
“The building design has gone through a few iterations, making adjustments based on feedback from a variety of stakeholders to arrive at a final plan that meets community needs and fits well within the village,” a Mount Desert 365 press release said.
Mount Desert 365 was formed in 2017 to promote economic development and the creation of year-round workforce housing.
