PORTLAND — Environmental consulting firm FBE Associates is surveying Maine lobstermen about vertical line configurations in their trap trawls.
These are voluntary surveys about vertical line use in New England and the Gulf of Maine. The information provided by industry participants will generate a baseline of how vertical lines are currently used by region and distance from shore.
This data collection effort has been prompted by discussions around potential regulations to provide additional protection for the North Atlantic right whale.

The group is also collecting complete vertical lines from fishermen to test their breaking strength. Fishermen may drop off line, labeled with the donor’s name and phone number, at Hamilton Marine in Southwest Harbor or the Cranberry Isles Fisherman’s Co-op.
