ELLSWORTH — Lobster trap tags may now be transferred to a new trap when necessary and attached with hog rings, Maine Marine Patrol deputy chief Maj. Rene Cloutier reminded lobstermen at a meeting with Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Keliher last week.
“We’re discouraging anyone from getting replacement tags,” he said. “We’ve switched out a pile of tags, and there’s just no need of it.”
Replacement tags should only be necessary if the tags are degraded to a point where they’re no longer readable or have been lost.
Maine was given permission to allow the transfer of tags by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission last year, Cloutier said, because of its at-sea enforcement capability of fisheries laws.
