WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced an award of $469,000 to the Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) from the U.S. Department of Transportation earlier this month. The funding will support the Marine Engine Testing and Emissions Laboratory (METEL) at MMA.

Collins chairs the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, and King is a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

“Finding practical solutions for reducing harmful emissions is a top priority, and we are pleased that the U.S. Department of Transportation has recognized the tremendous work being done by Maine Maritime Academy at its Marine Engine Testing and Emissions Laboratory,” the senators said in a statement. “This investment will enable the academy, in partnership with the University of Maine, to continue to develop emissions reductions and efficiency solutions for marine diesel engines, conduct critical research and help to advance the maritime industry.”

This grant was provided through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s University Transportation Center Discretionary Grants.
