MOUNT DESERT — Captain Peter Ill, along with his crew of Don and Charlie Kraftson and Rob VanAlan, took home the coveted Taormina Trophy in the IOD Class at the Northeast Harbor Fleet on Saturday.

The season championship was decided after 17 races against 20 other teams in a wide variety of sailing conditions on the Great Harbor of Mount Desert Island. The 14-point margin was often challenged by Bar Harbor’s Ned Johnston on his Gosling, but the Silver Spray was too consistent to be overcome.

On the last day of competition, Commodore Mia Thompson on Freyja won the day and pulled her team into third place overall with finishes of third and second. Ill won the first race of the afternoon, but the second race was won by Captain David Rockefeller on his Caribou.

Competitors gathered after sailing to award the trophy and congratulate the winners on a successful and challenging season. Awards were made at the 100th Annual Meeting of the Northeast Harbor Fleet, a sailing club that welcomes all who wish to enjoy the scenic local waters and learn how to sail or operate a motorboat.
