ELLSWORTH — The Maine Department of Marine Resources has published proposed regulations and season dates for scallop diving and dragging for the 2015-2016 harvesting season. A public hearing is set for Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at Ellsworth City Hall. Other hearings will be held in Augusta and Machias; written comments will be accepted until Sept. 27.
MDI waters are part of Zone 2 in the scallop management system. For Zone 2, a 70-day season is set for divers to start on Dec. 1, and the proposed last day of the season is April 15. For draggers in Zone 2, a 70-day season is set to start on Dec. 1 and the proposed last day of the season is April 13.
“Nothing changes for Zone 2 this year,” Trisha Cheney of the DMR said Wednesday. “It will be the same daily limit and the same number of days. The only thing different is rotation, new bottom will be opened up that wasn’t fished last year.”
As in the 2014-2015 season, the plan is for a daily possession limit of 15 gallons for Zone 1 and Zone 2, and a daily possession limit of 10 gallons for Zone 3.
