EAST MACHIAS — The Downeast Salmon Federation (DSF) is looking for volunteers to help with its 2015 fin clipping effort at the East Machias Aquatic Research Center at 13 Willow St.
The work will start on Monday, Sept. 21, and continue into October. The DSF is currently raising 250,000 juvenile Atlantic salmon at the research center as part of an ongoing restoration stocking effort on the East Machias River.
In order to assess the success of this project, each one of the fish needs to be marked to differentiate between salmon reared at the research center and wild salmon. This is done by clipping a small fin on the fish. This is an essential part of the project, and the DSF would like to have as many community members involved as possible.
Volunteers are welcome to help for whatever length of time fits in their schedules.
