MDI High School sailors host regatta

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Teen sailors competed in six short races Saturday in light wind during the sailing team’s only home regatta of the fall season.

The fleet of “turbo” 420s built in partnership between the Northeast Harbor Fleet and Sailing School, Mount Desert Island Community Sailing Center, and other local yacht clubs are extra stable and maneuverable. Young skippers and crews kept the boats upright as the small hulls swung through steep angles to the gasps of watching parents. The teens also knew how to use them to gain small advantages racing in the light air conditions.

Representing MDI were Chris Booher, Kincaid McCullough, Hutchins Garrish, Connor Ratcliff, and Simon Robertson.

Next up, the team hopes to attend the Cheverus Fall Cup on Oct. 19.
