Limited-entry is granted

AUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Marine Resources last week adopted rule changes that will create the Swans Island limited-entry program, allowing up to 72 commercial island resident lobster licenses to be issued annually. Lobstermen on the island voted for a referendum earlier this year to enact a limited-entry program there.

Also included in the rule changes is the deadline for registration for the Swans Island Lobster Conservation Area, allowing fishermen to register at any time.

It also increases the maximum allowable number of lobster trap tags in the area from 475 to 600, for consistency with existing Maine law.
