Kayaker found safe

SWAN’S ISLAND – A kayaker who was reported missing Tuesday evening was found safe Wednesday morning after spending the night in a cabin on an offshore island.

Jackson Day, 18, had been last seen around 10 a.m. Tuesday in an 8-foot yellow kayak at Swan’s Island Ferry Terminal. He was reported missing by his mother around 8 p.m Tuesday night, prompting a search involving Coast Guard boats from Southwest Harbor and aircraft from Cape Cod, the Marine Patrol and Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies.

According to Marine Patrol Sgt. Troy Dow, Day “wasn’t aware of the weather coming in” Tuesday afternoon and was surprised by the stormy conditions. He paddled to an island where he spent the night in a cabin.

“He paddled back in this morning” at about 7:45, Dow said.
