Elver leader resigns

DRESDEN — State Rep. Jeffrey Pierce (R-Dresden) has resigned as executive director of the Maine Elver Fishermen Association. He has been replaced on an interim basis by Abden Simmons of Waldoboro.

Pierce was chosen as the elver harvester association’s executive director when the group first formed in the spring of 2013. He resigned over the weekend after he was sworn in as a legislator by Governor Paul LePage last week.

Simmons was elected by the MEFA Board of Directors to serve until the association’s annual meeting in March, 2015. Pierce will serve as an “advisor” to Simmons.

“I can’t fulfill all of my duties” as executive director, Pierce said last week. “And I wanted to get rid of any premise of conflict of interest.”

Pierce also resigned as executive director of the Alewife Harvesters of Maine.
