AUGUSTA — In late February, both chambers of the Maine Legislature unanimously approved a resolution honoring the crewmembers of El Faro, the 790-foot cargo ship that sank with 33 crew members aboard in October.
Four of those crewmembers were from Maine and attended Maine Maritime Academy (MMA): Capt. Michael Davidson of Windham, Michael Holland of Wilton, Dylan Meklin of Rockland and Danielle Randolph of Rockland. A fifth, Mitchell Kuflik of Brooklyn, N.Y., also attended the Castine school.
In their resolution, lawmakers expressed condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the lost crew members and praised those in the U.S. Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force who “valiantly searched for the crew members of the El Faro.”
Attempts to recover a black box from the sunken ship have so far proven unsuccessful, but in January, the National Transportation Safety Board announced it would resume searching for the data recorder in the spring.
The ship is under 15,000 feet of water.
