Crab bycatch

PORTLAND — Jonah crab are frequent bycatch in lobster traps and other fishing gear. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) is proposing changes to its Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for the species.

The intent of the Draft Addendum to the plan is to “cap incidental landings of Jonah crab while ensuring the inclusion of current participants in the Jonah crab fishery,” according to a commission statement.

Maine Department of Resources Director of External Affairs Terry Stockwell will host a hearing on proposed changes in the DMR conference room in Portland on March 17 from 6-8 p.m. Contact Stockwell at [email protected] or 624-6553.
