Coast Guard helicopter performs lighthouse maintenance

BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island residents noticed a Coast Guard helicopter in the area last week. It was an HH-60J Jayhawk based at Air Station Cape Cod, officials said, here to carry the Southwest Harbor Aids to Navigation Team to offshore lighthouses to perform maintenance.

“The helicopter is up here for two days helping to take parts and personnel to lighthouses in the area,” said Lt. Scott McCann, public affairs officer for Sector Northern New England. “It comes twice a year to transport crews and equipment to the lighthouses.” Even though the lighthouses are automated, regular maintenance is needed to keep the lights cleaned up and in accordance with posted characteristics, he said.

Stops included Matinicus, Petit Manan, Mount Desert Rock, Libby, Two Bush and Swans Island.

“We made good use of the helicopter while it was here,” McCann said, conducting training with the Eastport station crew. “The helicopter’s crew also did its own training off Cadillac Mountain.”
