PORTLAND — Mount Desert Island High School youth sailors finished fifth of 18 teams Saturday at the Sail Maine Casco Bay Open regatta, a qualifier for the I-420 Atlantic Coast Championship Regatta in Greenwich, Conn., later this month. Conditions were sunny, with wind gusting to 15 knots.
Sailing for MDI were Chris Booher, Connor Ratcliff, Kincaid Macculloch, Hutchin Gerrish, Kevin Elk and Lilly Anderson. MDI in fifth with 109 points finished just behind Marblehead (Mass.) High School (104), Yarmouth High School (88), North Kingstown (RI) High School (78) and Cape Elizabeth High School (76).
“It took at least one rotation for the team to reacquaint themselves with the heavier C420s, and although MDI had no bullets on the day, they sailed fairly consistently,” Coach John Macauley said. “Eighteen teams made for a very crowded starting line, and it is often the start that makes or breaks the race. You can bet that starts will be a focus for Coach (Liana) Folger as the team prepares for the upcoming Fall Fleet Race in Burlington, Vt., this weekend.”
