Aqua Farms rebuilding

TRENTON — Acadia Aqua Farms, the mussel company whose new processing facility on the Bar Harbor Road was destroyed in a fire in November, is hoping to resume work in a rebuilt building in June.

Fiona DeKoning said the replacement building is nearly complete, with crews finishing the roof this week. Installing the processing equipment will take several more months.

23-year-old Alex DeKoning, a son of owners Fiona and Theo, is welding much of the new equipment himself, Fiona said.

“Some of the more complicated equipment we’re buying in again.”

The mild winter has been a boon to the business, she said. The market for mussels is strong year-round, and harvesting has been much easier than this time last year, when some of their aquaculture lease areas were iced in.
