Tree clearing closes road

MOUNT DESERT — The section of Sargeant Drive that runs along the edge of Somes Sound will be closed from around 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 23-24 to allow for the removal of dead trees on both sides of the road.

Public Works Director Tony Smith said the closure of both traffic lanes “will allow us to use a crane to hold the trees while being cut and prevent them from falling off into the water.”

“Depending on progress next week and available budget, we might do some additional work in the spring of 2016.”

Smith said the town would not be doing any tree work on Acadia National Park property adjacent to the road.

There are no homes along the stretch of Sargeant Drive where the tree work will be done, and access to homes on either side of the work area will be maintained.

“Homes will be able to be accessed from either the Route 198 end or the Millbrook Road end,” Smith said. “Dispatch will be notified so that emergency vehicles will know which end of Sargeant Drive to use to access properties if necessary.”
