MOUNT DESERT — The Select Board voted unanimously last week to deny a bike tour company’s request to bring cyclists to the Village Green at the Northeast Harbor Marina on seven Sundays this summer for a picnic lunch and bike fitting before starting a leg of a four-day tour of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park.
Trek Travel said it would bring the cyclists in a 15-passenger van, which would tow a trailer carrying their bikes. The dates were seven consecutive Sundays starting June 26.
“We would need lawn space for the bicycles, equipment and food,” the company said in its application. “We have portable racks for the bicycles and tables for the food.”
On its website, Trek Travel lists highlights of its MDI/Acadia tour including:
“Pedal along Rockefeller’s serene carriage roads.”
“Savor panoramic views from the top of Cadillac Mountain.”
“Explore the shops and eateries of bustling Bar Harbor, just a few steps from your seaside hotel.”
That last point was the main reason the town’s Harbor Committee recommended that the Select Board deny Trek Travel’s application.
“They would be coming to Northeast Harbor to set up…running their business out of the marina, and then riding over to Bar Harbor and spending all their money and staying in Bar Harbor,” Harbor Committee member Howie Motenko said.
Amy Davison, Trek Travel’s trip design coordinator, told the Select Board, “We try to spend money in Northeast Harbor. I tried to get reservations at the Asticou [Inn]. But it seems our groups are too big or, the Asticou in particular, said they’ve got other bike groups and they couldn’t accept our reservation.”
She also said Trek Travel had cancelled the last two of the seven proposed Sunday stops in Northeast Harbor.
