Town manager search begins

TREMONT — Selectmen have decided to contact the Maine Municipal Association for guidance in proceeding with a search for a town manager.

Former Bar Harbor Town Manager Dana Reed has been Tremont’s interim manager since June.

The search for a permanent manager was prompted by newspaper articles citing Reed as one of seven candidates for the position of city manager in Sedona, Ariz., according to Kathi Thurston, chairman of the board of selectmen.

Thurston said the decision to begin a search followed an executive session Tuesday to discuss the matter. On Wednesday morning, she said selectmen would prefer to keep Reed on as town manager.

“We’re very much encouraging Dana to stay with us,” she said. “That’s our goal.”

Thurston acknowledged that might not be possible, given the other opportunities available to an experienced administrator such as Reed.

As interim manager, Reed has been working three days a week. The new manager would work fulltime.

“Three days a week is not enough,” Thurston said.

Reed was town manager of Bar Harbor from 1986 until the spring of 2014.

According to the Sedona city website, Reed and the other finalists were selected from a field of 108 candidates.

“Dana’s served us very well,” Thurston said. “It would be nice if we could keep him.”
