Town board to consider rescheduling pot moratorium vote

MOUNT DESERT — The Board of Selectmen will hold a special meeting Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 5 p.m. to consider scheduling a special town meeting for Feb. 26 for residents to vote on a proposed 180-day moratorium on the sale of recreational marijuana in town.

The board voted unanimously last week to cancel a scheduled Jan. 29 special town meeting on that question after residents at a public hearing argued that a moratorium was unnecessary, at least at this time.

However, board Chairman John Macauley said Monday that, since the Legislature has yet to pass a law creating rules for marijuana sales or to extend the statewide moratorium beyond Feb. 1, the town needs to be prepared to enact its own moratorium “so that we aren’t caught flat-footed.”

The selectmen also will consider revised wording for a proposed marijuana sales moratorium ordinance.
