Dean Read of Bar Harbor, at right, was named the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s Cadillac Award winner at that organization’s annual meeting and awards dinner on Tuesday at the Bar Harbor Club. Presenting the group’s top honor is Art Blank, CEO of MDI Hospital. Read, the former head of Bar Harbor Bankshares, was honored for his work throughout the community including with the MDI YMCA, Bar Harbor Rotary and other groups.

More than 150 people gathered at Camp Beech Cliff in Somesville on Friday, Oct. 23, to wish retiring Acadia National Park Superintendent Sheridan Steele, in front with his wife, Barb, a happy retirement. The event was hosted by Friends of Acadia. Speakers praised Steele for his dedication to protecting the park’s resources, his work to expand and improve offerings in the Schoodic area, and his willingness to work with numerous area groups and organizations.

An open house to discuss a proposed parking structure in downtown Bar Harbor is set for Monday, Nov. 9, from 5-7 p.m. in the municipal building. The garage would be in the lot behind the West Street Hotel, pictured front left. Rodick Street would be at the far right. Consultants from Bermello, Ajamil & Partners and Desman Associates, who have engaged in a four-phase study of the potential project, will be available. Feedback they collect at the meeting will inform their recommendations to the Town Council for any next steps. All completed phases of the study are available on the town’s website, barharbormaine.gov.

Rotarians Sallie Boggs, left, and Lisa Horsch Clark, paint fingernails purple at Pat’s Pizza in Bar Harbor Saturday in honor of World Polio Day. Rotary International, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, the Gates Foundation and others, hopes to eradicate the disease from the few remaining countries where it’s found. Pat’s donated $1 for every pizza sold, contributing to over $400 raised in the day’s effort.
