Genetic boost

The Jackson Laboratory received notification that the genetics research facility had been awarded $24.5 million in grant funding from the National Institutes of Health.

The money was to be spread out over five years.

Fess up now

Town officials in Bar Harbor were cracking down of unregistered weekly rental properties after fewer than half of the 350 or so property owners in question registered their rentals.

Failure to do so could result in a code enforcement violation.

Dentures, please

The state’s highest ranking health official was decrying a recent vote in Mount Desert to eliminate fluoride in the town’s public water supply.

Citing fluoride’s role in preventing tooth decay, Public Health Director Dr. Dora Ann Mills was concerned that the decision would lead other municipalities to do the same.

Give peace a chance

More than 200 people gathered on the Bar Harbor Village Green to protest the Iraq War, joining other concerned citizens in more than 100 Maine cities and towns.

Protests also were held in Southwest Harbor and the Mount Desert village of Somesville.
