Survey out for comprehensive plan update

TREMONT — Members of the Comprehensive Plan Task Force have sent out a survey looking to gather information from residents to help craft an updated comprehensive plan for the town.

Copies of the survey were sent to residents with their tax bills and a link can be found on the town’s website for those who would rather fill out the information online.

“Tremont is updating its Comprehensive Plan in order to determine the needs and wishes of its citizens for the next decade,” wrote task force chairman Brett Witham in the online introduction. “The plan will help direct future growth and development and will help guide decisions made by the Select Board, Planning Board and other town boards and committees.”

A comprehensive plan is an advisory document used to help guide town policies and ordinance changes. Members of the task force have agreed to meet regularly and vet information from the public in order to update a plan that was last approved by voters in 2011. The deadline for this plan is 2023.

Similar to the information collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, the survey for residents asks about household makeup, the ages and occupation of residents, whether they have internet access and if that is important for personal or professional reasons. It also asks residents to state what is important to them regarding Tremont and what they would like to have more of in the town.

“The Comprehensive Plan Task Force seeks a large response to the enclosed survey in order to be sure that it is responding to the will of the majority, and not just to a vocal few,” wrote Witham on behalf of the task force. “When the results of the survey are tabulated, we will hold a public meeting to discuss our preliminary findings with residents and taxpayers. Our final recommendations will be presented for a Town Meeting vote when the process is completed.”

Those who participate by filling out the survey are asked to have it completed and returned to the town office (if filling out the paper version) by Sept. 30.

Any questions regarding the survey or the comprehensive plan can be addressed by calling the town office at (207) 244-7204.
