BAR HARBOR — All that ice, sleet and snow that has been falling steadily for weeks now has caused highway workers to use an estimated half of their yearly salt and sand supply in an effort to keep local roads safe.
Public safety crews also have been kept busy during the recent cold snap, responding to reports of broken pipes and flooded structures. On Sunday night police closed off Eagle Lake Road for several hours because of extreme icing.
As of this week, public works supervisor Chip Reeves estimated that his highway crews had used approximately 700 tons of salt and 1,800 tons of sand on the roads, at an estimated cost of $69,000.
