Small mussel, oyster farm planned off Bartlett Island

MOUNT DESERT — Victor Doyle of Mount Desert has applied for a limited-purpose (3-year, experimental) aquaculture lease for a 1-acre site east of Bartlett Island in Blue Hill Bay, according to the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR).

Doyle plans to grow blue mussels, quahogs, soft-shelled clams, razor clams, oysters, scallops and green sea urchins using suspended culture. A 30-day public comment period, during which interested parties may submit written comments or request a public hearing, ends April 15. Experimental leases do not automatically require a public hearing.

Application materials are available at maine.gov/dmr. Contact Cindy Burke at DMR at 624-6567, or contact Doyle directly at 460-6485.
